Do you know a hero for horses? Maybe someone who dedicates her life to helping rescues, or who regularly donates time and effort in the interest of horses, or someone who has fought for legislation that has improved horse welfare?
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is accepting nominations for its second annual Heroes for Horses Award to be presented at the 2007 Pegasus Awards on January 12.
According to a USEF press release, the award is presented to an individual or organization “that has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the protection and welfare of horses over a period of many years and/or have saved equines through an act of courage and resolve during a crisis situation.”
The awardees of the inaugural Heroes for Horses Award included volunteers who saved stranded horses left behind in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Both the Louisiana State University Equine Studies Program and the Blue Devils Horse Platoon were given the award in light of their commitment to protect and support the welfare of the horse.
The Blue Devils Horse Platoon represents the United States Army and the United States Army Reserve as a mounted ceremonial and equestrian sport unit. Their motto is “Horses first, men second, officers last.” All members are active serving members of the Army Reserves who train at least once a week together on their own time. They provide their own tack, uniforms, mounts, trucks and trailers. No government funds are used in the upkeep of this platoon.
To nominate a hero for horses, the person performing the nomination must be a USEF member and must submit a complete description of what the person has done on behalf of horses.
Nominations are due by December 8 to the USEF Awards Director Kristyn Kay kkay@usef.org or 859/225-6932.
