Central Wyoming College is located in Riverton Wyoming and is a two year public college.  Central Wyoming College offers students the opportunity to pursue an associate’s degree in a number of different and exciting fields.  Central Wyoming College also offers Certificates and Credential certifications in many fields of study as well.

Wyoming is the nation’s least populated state, with only a half million residents and 99,000 horses, but the equine industry in Wyoming produces over $190 million dollars in goods and services.  This large volume of business provides 1400 full time jobs and directly impacts 4900 other jobs in the state.  It is estimated that approximately one third of the state’s residents are involved in the equine industry as owners, services providers, or volunteers.

Central Wyoming College offers several degree options to students who wish to pursue a degree in equine studies.  The equine industry is a very big business in the United States and this gives students the opportunity to choose from a wide range of career options.  Central Wyoming College offers a variety of Equine Studies programs ranging from an Associate of Applied Science degree in Horse Management to an Associate of Science degree in Horse Science.  There are also several credential programs offered that include Equine Training Technology, Horse Management, Farrier Science and Teaching Riding. 

By word of mouth, students have come from across the nation to Riverton to enroll in one of the several different equine programs that the college has to offer.  This program has even attracted some international students.  The college’s horsemanship program is one of the main features that draw in students.  This program is able to transform a student’s love for horses into a meaningful and productive career.

The Associate of Science Degree in Horse Science is a transfer program that is intended for students who want to further education at a four year institution.  Some of the specific areas that are covered in this degree program are horse production, horsemanship, training, exhibition, and care.  Students are allowed to board a horse at the Central Wyoming College Equine Facility, but those who do are required to also take at least one course in equine facility management.  Some of the major program requirements to obtain this degree include:

·         Macroeconomics

·         Horse Science

·         Equine Nutrition

·         Horsemanship I

·         Horsemanship II

·         Horse Showmanship I

·         Stock Horse Use and Show I

·         English Equitation

·         Training for Timed Events

Central Wyoming College also offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Horse Management for those students who would like to enter the work force and not transfer to a four year institution.  The major requirements for this program include:

·         Introduction to Business

·         Small Business Practices or Practical Accounting I

·         Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication

·         Horse Science

·         Equine Nutrition

·         Horsemanship I

·         Horsemanship II

·         Horse Showmanship

·         Stock Horse Use and Showing I

·         Stock Horse Use and Showing II

·         English Equitation I

·         English Equitation II

·         Training for Timed Events

·         Horse Event Production

·         Teaching Riding

Students may also choose to pursue a number of different certificate and credential programs.  Students who do not wish to purse and associate’s degree in Horse Management can instead pursue a certificate in Horse Management.  Students can also choose from three different credential programs.  The first program is the Equine Training Technology credential which is designed to provide students with the beginning skills and techniques that are necessary to find employment in the western horse training field.  Students may also choose to obtain the Teaching Riding Credential which is designed to give students the knowledge that is necessary to become a riding instructor for either an individual or a group.  Finally, student can pursue a Farrier Science credential.
