Feed Storage

Pallets are a must if you are storing your hay and feed in your tack room.  Pallets will keep your hay from absorbing moisture on the bottoms of the bales.  Every time you get a load of hay, I recommend sweeping underneath the pallets to prevent unnecessary build-up of hay.  Feed can be stored on pallets as well or in plastic tubs with lids.  The tubs will help reduce the infestation of mice in your feed as well as other bugs that like it as well.  Opened bags of feed should be poured into plastic or aluminum trash cans with lids to also keep the mice away.  Remember that mice can fit anywhere they can fit their heads and they can also jump fairly high.  If your barn has a barn cat population, I would not recommend keeping rat poison or mice traps out as the cats may eat them or get caught in the traps.
