What To Do With Your Horse When You're Busy

Of course in West Texas it is always nice and sunny when I am overloaded with work and barely even have time to drive to the barn and feed my own horse.  In fact, my husband feels bad for my horse and has even offered to start working him in the round pen because I haven't had time to ride.  This is almost a miracle because my husband is not the horsiest person in the world, but very supportive in all of my endeavors.  So, when it is nice and cold next week I might have time to ride but then the weather will be bad and I won't be able to anyway.  What's a horse girl to do?

Well, I might just take my husband up on his offer to work little Rio in the round pen.  As I sit here, Rio is getting fatter and fatter and could really use a workout a couple times a week.  My husband would also benefit from the learning experience it will be.  I am always trying to get him more involved and I was really surprised when he offered to do this for me.  I also think that this is a good time to let Rio get back to being a horse.  We tend to keep our horses stalled for convenience, but they really do benefit when they get to stretch their legs and roll in  the grass.  This helps them to get back to a natural state of mind.  A couple trips in the round pen keeps him thinking, but otherwise he will definately benefit from spending time getting back to his horseyness.

So, when you find yourself busy, let your horse take a little vacation of his own.  Let him get back to being a horse and having a little fun the horsey way.
