With the holidays right around the corner, a lot of students don't necessarily have their minds on which equine college to pick, but time is running out and it's time to start applying.
I attended what I believe to be one of the best equine programs I think that there is. As a high school senior, I first had my sights set on being a veterinarian, but since I am really horrible at math, I gave that up. Then I moved to Amarillo, Texas where I though surely there would be so much horse activity I would love it. I could not have been more disappointed. Even though we have the AQHA headquarters, there are not a lot of shows that go on here and everybody travels to Oklahoma City for the big shows. So, it was time to find a college and I found my dream major at West Texas A&M University. It was everything I wanted and I realized that vet school was not for me.
The equine business major at WT is a very large program and the majority of the ag students are in the program. The program is also mostly girls, although there are a few boys that were lucky enough to have classes with us. The program is taught by the best equine professionals I have ever met. They all have experience in training, in fact one of my professors trained for Bob Avila in Arizona. They are all AQHA certified judges and completely committed to you doing well in the program and graduating.
I am not saying that everyone should go to WT, although you will love every minute of it, there are numerous equine colleges for you to choose from and many of them are just as professional. Look for the school that meets your equine needs and then hand yourself over to the program. You will not be disappointed.
