For horses that have not been exposed to the equine herpes virus, it is highly recommended a vaccine containing EHV-1. This vaccine will protect against the respiratory form of the virus, although it may not protect a horse from developing the often-fatal neurological form of equine herpes, but it will produce anti-bodies that will help a horse fight off the virus if and when it is exposed to it.
And for horses that have been previously vaccinated for equine herpes, a booster shot can be administered.
the problem with this herpes is that it’s a latent virus, so a percentage of the horses that have been affected will be latent carriers after they’re infected.
