I probably wont be much help,but your post sounds like I had written it myself. the only difference is I havent been able to get my mare vet checked yet. every time I have scheduled an emergency has came up and he couldnt make the trip. however I had a lady who raises horses look at her and told me if she had a foal the previous year she could still have milk from that. thats all I know.lol good luck.
