Riding airbag.
Without trawling through all of the post What is it.

Does one wrap ones self in it to lessen the impact of an unexpected dismount.

Certainly can be used for just normal falls, but was designed for horse rotations while jumping, to lessen impact of horse landing on rider.

Basically, it's a vest that protects the rider much like an airbag in a car. The vest uses a CO2 gas canister to inflate in 0.1 seconds (it used to be 0.2, thus the name). The Lanyard of the vest connects with the nylon stirrup straps at the front of the saddle. After the rider has mounted the saddle, he or she clips the 2 ends together.

When that rip-cord is pulled away and the CO2 gas is released, the Point-Two vest inflates very suddenly and presses very tightly around the body, enough to knock your breath out for few moments before it starts to deflate. The airbag will only be activated if the rider is separated from the horse, protecting the all important areas of the body, the neck, ribs and coccyx.
One rider forgot to unhook the rip-cord before dismounting and you can imagine what happened.

The word is that these jackets dramatically improve safety, but that word is only coming thus far from the company and from sponsored riders. I do not see how wearing the vest can hurt anything, other than your wallet, but the risk of serious injury is far from eliminated. At $750 US for the vest (rip-cord sold separately of course), and $22.50 for replacement canisters, the added safety comes at a hefty price.

Point-Two vests were originally developed by a Frenchman for motorcycle racing. The vests had their US retail debut at Fair Hill International 2009

LTC4H Thanks for that information. My flipent question was not far of the mark. I do see a use but I very much doubt if I should ever invest in one. The riding i do is treking, a close cousin to endurance but at a walk. The only thing that would cause a fall with the horse landing on the rider is the type of country we ride in, and at times, if the horse fell on the rider the rocks would deal with the vest.

I also see a problem as the vest inflates and the horse rolls over one, the preasure of a 1200 pound horse rolling over the body would not change as the vest would have to be huge to absorb that kind of weight without transfering it to the body. An air bag in a vehicle works on the principle of quick inflation to stop the body from hitting a solid object but not to have a solid object continuing the preasure from behind.

My observation would be unforgiving object, airbag with me inside, 1200 pound horse having a rest on top. I still think the air bag would not help. The only way I see it helping is if one got thrown and hit the ground (without the horse landing on top) then it might have a use to deflect impact, but I prefer my method of self preservation, that is have a couple of drinks before riding. Takes all the stress away and like most of those in car accidents that have had one to many, they survive.

I am being a little silly I know, but what next. My second method is to become farmilure with the feeling one experences when falling off the horse. I am also acoustomed to those feelings having perfected the art of landing on my side jumping to my feet proclaiming I'm alright, I'm alright to the other 50 or so in the group.

I have even been known to fall of my horse when stationary. No, I had not had a drink, that came afterwards, giving me an excuse for falling from a stationary animal.
