So I went out to ride w/a friend Monday night. She has been wanting to have an evening ride because it's so much cooler.
Went and saddled up a 4 yr old named Taffy. Shes gorgeous, but still a bit green. We were just going to ride around the field next to the house, and she has been out on the trail before so didn't expect any issues.
Warmed up in the arena and she did great. The mare Cindy was on was throwing a fit, but Taffy was fine.
Left out and she got a bit nervous, but nothing crazy. We were going thru very tall weeds and she was going great until all of the sudden the ground dropped out from under us! There was a huge ditch recently added to the field from all of the torrential down pours we've had lately, at least a foot deep!

She took one step down and then took a massive jump the rest of the way over. Needless to say I wasn't expecting it,lol, but I stayed w/her!(lost my sunglasses though

)
After that her behavior went steadily down hill, so we turned around and were making our way back and surprise, the ditch goes all the way across the field and theres no other way around! So we slowly sidled up to it, and she completely refused to go over it, even though I found a spot that was only about 3 inches deep. While trying to coax her across she took another massive leap, but this time sideways about 5-6 ft. Unfortunately she didn't jump across the ditch,lol. That's when I decided to get off and walk her across.
Got back on, but she was so worked up by that time that she was ready to bolt and I was near the road at that point so I got back off and walked her home. I got back on in the arena because i didn't want her to think that behavior is going to get her out of working, but I know the ditch is what started it so I had to forgive her.
I guess it was good practice for when I take Jackson out for the first time,lol.
