What do you spend each year for vet costs per horse? For feed? Anything else?

My bi-yearly vet bill is typically not less than $160-$180 each; however, last year I spent over $2200 more on vet bills related to a lameness issue. It's always the unforeseeable costs that tip the scale.

Within the last 8 months, I'd say a whopping $0

I do my own vaccines and care for lamness issues, cuts, mild colics, etc.

Do you have to get yearly shots, dewormers or vaccines? Just curious if these are done like once a year and are they very exspensive? Thanks

I'm in CA, so reguarding the vaccines you would have to ask around to see what horses in your state need. Mine get tentus, eastern, western, west nile, strangles once a year. I don't do Rabies for there hasn't been a known case in a very long time. I also do dewormers every 60 days and I trade off on which kind. I would say your shots will cost you around $150-$200 if you have the vet do them. The wormers you can buy a yearly package deal for like $25 at www.countrysupply.com

Been lucky have not had a horse to the vets since last summer. Vet bills we cover as needed some years are worse then others. LOL horses and vets just seem to go hand in hand LOL.
The only horses i give vaccines to are teh ones leaving the property and anything coming in must have shots before coming on property. When i do give shots it's a 5 way with stangles. I give them myself . I also west nile annually as well .
Mature horses are wormed every 60 days and young stuff every 30 from time of weaning.
I also do teh majority of my own feet but do have a farrier who i het out when needed and i have a few that I do not do myself so I have enough of them now that i no longer have to pay travel LOL. But even doing some of my own i still get a big year end total.

I spend about $180 every 8 weeks for farrier from April thru November. Kinda pricey but I have the most awesome farrier and me believes a cheap farrier will only cost more in the long run as well as lost hours in the saddle.
My feed is cheap. I shop around for a fairly good hay at a reasonable price. I feel the better the hay the less other supplements and grain you need to dump in them. I have 2 mares. One is a super easy keeper and maintains well easily. The other is 3 and growing and teething and at the moment is getting extra feed. I will assume like every other mare I've owned she too will evolve into a horse that will gain weight by breathing!
My mares are both very healthy. No vet bills for years (knock on wood) except I opt for chiropractics when I feel both the horses and the dogs need it. The past year my canine vet has out priced my horse vet. How sad is that? Office call for canine now equals a farm call for the horse.
