Well if you have it in a place with barns and stables it can be 500.00 or over per month. At least that seems to be the going rate around here. I am really not to sure on the exspense of feeding your horse. I will say that hay is not all that exspensive but there are other things that a horse needs to have.

If you board at a full care stable, which includes twice a day feeding of hay, stall cleaning, and shavings it can be anywhere from $250 - $650. I pay $325 for that at my stable. If you do just turn out, which should include feeding, then it can be anywhere from $150 - $300.

I also feed my guys extra. I give them beet pulp and that is priced around $20 a month + supplaments and that prices out to $30 a month.

So for me total with two horses, I usually pay $700, that does not include vet, shoes, or tack I might need.

I board at a full-care stable that is very reasonable when compared to others in the area. They also do not nickle and dime boarders on other additional charges. I pay $600. Most in the area are at least $650-$750. The facility includes turnout, automatic waterers and a very large indoor arena. (Also cross country course, hunt course, outdoor dressage arena, trails, other all purpose outdoor.) Many other facilities in the area may charge similarly but then charge extra to turn out horses, blanket them or feed supplements with feedings.

Default Nickel And Dime

you could write a book about that at my barn the 12x14 are around 325.00 and then they hit you for everything. Special Feed Charge, Try and sell you shavings at a ridiculous price, Tack locker charge, Trailer Parking Charge, it is ridiculous.

Anyway I need to get some rest and now i am fumming again at those charges it would just be nicer to have a flat fee, it seems easier to accept.

I don't board my horses we have our own acerage and the cost of keeping my horses is a tad pricey when it comes to hay and having to get it hauled. But I also have 20 head here as well. My minis are the cheapest to keep LOl
I do board a couple of horses here for freinds.
I am charging 200 a month for outside board for a yearling. She does pay farrier and vet bills. I include all his feed in that as well as mineral and worming in the monthly price as he is a yearling they are done monthly.
I also have a Rehab perch mare and that is a feed bill in itself. She came to me almost 800 lbs underweight and in foal. I am only charging the cost of feed to the owner( owner is like my son and considered family) He is presently paying 360 a month to just cover her feed costs. He pays for all supplements, minerals grain etc and hay. She is still in foal and now weighs in at about 300 lbs under weight .
I hate the cost of fence repair when some oene else horse wrecks my fences or building. I hate having to threaten to seize a horse inorder to get paid up.

Holy Cow are those stalls gold lined???? I have mine at home and as long as I shop for hayand buy shavings by splitting a semi load with friends, it costs minimal (until I ad in land, taxes,....). I keep 2 at home. They each have their own stall that only gets used for graining them. Then I have the barn set up where there is a free stall they can come and go as they please. That opens to a dry lot which runs out to 2 seperate pastures. The horses are easy keepers and get basically vitimins and flax, next to nothing for grain. We feed big bales and one of those lasts me 1 month between 2 horses. We use the big bales because hay handling is sooo easy with the large bales.
We are looking at hay tonight, big bales of first and second crop. The farmer is asking $20.00 a bale. That means it will cost me 10 bucks a horse per month for hay! I am floored by what you are posting you pay for board considering what my cost actually is. For serious competitive riders I could see $600 but most of the people I know either have horses at home or board them but rarely even see them. Wow! $600+++ a month????

Amused - Pure Profit!!!!! I am located in CA and we have no hay shortages, etc. My barn currently has tons and tons and tons of stalls and every year they raise the board $25. My board now is $325 which is for an outside pipe stall with automatic watering system, 2 flakes hay am, 2 flakes hay pm, and shavings about once a week. They rarely ever do any repairs or even fix up the footing in the arenas. They are even adding more stalls, so I am guessing we are paying for the construction????? I dunno, sometimes I get upset at all the costs and why it needs to be raised once a year every year, but then again I am not a BO!

:If I had to pay for board I wouldn't own horses, that is crazy what some of you are paying. We are in AZ so not a lot of grass pastures around. We have our own property, and our horses are in constent turn out with shade covers. We feed Bermuda grass hay and it goes for (on average) $10 per bale (120lb bales). I now feed my older horse (25yrs young) Equine senior and my Broodmare is on Strategy for those extra calories. So roughly 12 bales of hay a month equals $120 in hay. Grain averages $78 a month. Water runs $30 a month. Property is ours. So day to day feed per month is about $200. Then there is the farrier, vet, & misc stuff. I do board a friends retired horse and I charge her for the cost of hay (thats all he gets), dumpster, and water, plus a little extra. Her bill is $120 a month.
I'm in the wrong business, I need to start boarding! he he

I have to say that I have it made in the shade. I help out an couple who have several horses and donkeys as well as Barbados sheep. They have a cabin in Red River, NM that they like to visit so I take care of all of the animals while they are gone. I really only have to feed 2-3 times a summer and they don't go anywhere in the winter. I get to keep my horse there for free. It's a pretty nice barn, arena, round pen, etc. I really recommend that if your boarding budget is low then you should look for opportunities like this. I put an ad in the Thrifty Nickel. I spend about $100-$150 on hay every 3-4 months. And I spend about $50 a month on sweet feed.
