Does anyone use an automatic fly system in their barn or sometype of pre treatment? Every year we deal with massive amount of flies.

Just looking into a good system that is dependable and safe.

Hey! Good to see you around the forums Of course, I've always got the fly spray, You can also get the tape, and there are roles that you can get that stretch across the barn. My uncle uses Fly predators in his pasture and says they work great, he's had a big change when he uses them.
For fly spray I use Repel 35X with a mixture and it lasts for two days on the pasture-kept horses. Some of my horses get flies bad in one area, while others get them bad in another. If I have a horse getting them terribly in/around the eyes I just put a mask on, a few of mine, get them bad on the legs.
I've also heard you can nail up clear plastic bags (like ziplock bags/sandwich bags) half full of water, around near the ceiling of the inside of your barn. I've heard this works to ward off flies (Not sure how, if they see their reflection in the bag or WHAT) but have always heard that it does work. I was actually in an outdoor resteraunt in Key West FL this summer and these bags were hangin everywhere out there! No flies. I have yet to figure this one out...ideas anyone?

The best for barn use I think is a system by pyranha it is a simple low volume system that is like the little battery powered ones you use outside your doors at the house. But this works of a 55 gallon drum so it lasts a long time. IF you have heavy fly issues and manure piles close to the barn, (poor planning) then you will need predators and yes they work great. So with that said I hope it helps.

They best way is not to have any. Starting in March all my horses are put on Equitrol-feed thru larvicide, 33# Rabon blocks are put in the fields-mineral blocks with added rabon, and I hang the fly bags in various locations. On average 10-15 horses on the property, 2 dogs and 30 chickens. I DO NOT have any flys, can set an open coffee mug in barn and will not have a bug in it, haven't used/bought any type of external fly spray in 5 years, horses tails get trimmed off the ground every 2 months, they never use them to swat flys.
But, as stated earlier if you want to try to cut down on the fly population that already exists, the paranha system is probably one of the best.

I have found that using the Pyranha fly system in the barn works well and even better if you clean the stalls twice a day. I have had friends use the preditors and like them really well. Have not tried the feed throughs as they are not recommended for mares and stallion that are used for breeding. Check with the manufacture recommendations if you have broodmares and stallion. I a friend that does on her gelding just not the mares and stallions she said she noticed a difference. I personally don't like the bag traps or taps because I hate the smell that comes with them.
