I bought a ranch and wondered what type of horses to breed.


That to me is the classic cart before the horse. But it did lead me to my all time favorite question. What breed of horse is your favorite and why?

I have alot of favorite breeds but probably my most favorite is the all-around level-headed Quarter horse. I especially like QH's with good Foundation percentage, alot are like suped-up Quarter horses. I like them for their intelligence and their common sense which I've found some horses are without! But I suppose it all depends on what you would be interested in doing. If I was a competitive dressage rider, I'd probably have some type of warmblood, a Friesian cross etc...

If I was into alot of upper-level eventing I'd probably have a goofy high-strung, explosive Thoroughbred (and I say that because I have only found ONE Thoroughbred who wasn't explosive, didn't panick with the other horses left, no uncalled-for, exited, non-paying-attention behavior, and at the same time he was only 7 years old and not so ancient that he just didn't feel like flipping out lol) I don't get any of the above from a good 'ole Quarter horse. They also have great ability for many different disciplines !

Andalusian. Level headed, but with plenty of brio. Smart, really smart. Able to do it all.

Arab. Beautiful, graceful and intellegent. With good breeding you also get great attitude. Full of piss and vinegar (oops, can I say that here?).

Quarter Horse. Level headed, works all day, no nonsense.

Yay! I loved your post -I love alot of gorgeous breeds like the Arabs and Andalusian too...but when it's time for some work...or just relax and ride, I like the QH.

I love Saddlebreds. We have been breeding, raising and showing them for years. They can do anything from English to jumping to western. They are very easy to work with.

Until they figure out the slaughter plants and the excess horse population. I'd stick with beef cattle.
As for breeding horses, do research and breed what there is a good market for. On the East coast right now it is FEI Sport ponies.

i love appy's but really anything that really represents a beautifully put together horse...with all of the slaughter issues....rescue and train and resell....check out fugly horse

I Love National Show Horses, but I also love Appys, Paints, and QHs.
