I have seen a few live ones lol at least that's what the owner's stated that they were, and they did look alot like a chincoteague pony, it was like at a horse council/fair thingy... never been to the island or ridden one but I've read all the Misty books and love them

Do you have any or an intereste in the breed?

My friend had a chincoteague pony named Miracle.
I rode her a couple times, she was lazy LOL
When Amanda or I would ask for the canter she'd buck.

My mom & I are going this year to the round up!!
I think it's in July...
We might get one..I hope

I missed the round-up, but saw the ponies and babies. They are pretty colors but are very small, I thought. I was hoping to find one to take home. They were just too small for me. Probably Under 13.2 HH for the most part. I'm 5' 6 1/2" I would have looked like an Amazon riding one. Most had very nice conformation; well balanced.

Hi guys, i know i could easily google to answer my question but i'm sure i'll get a better answer from you guys.
Where do these ponies come from? Are they like the Brumbies in Australia or the Kaimanawa in New Zealand?
Cheers.

They are feral horses that were originally from stock that was either left there by shipwreck, or left when owners left the islands (depending on who you ask). They grow up on an island that isn't huge.. not a lot of nutrients. Lots of salt water and sea weed. Every year, they swim the horses from the outer island (Assateague, off the coast of VA I think) to the Chincoteague island. There the firemen auction the foals (and youngstock) to raise money for the island, and to thin the herd. Then the horses are swam back. Occasionally an Arabian stallion (or a few other breeds.. mostly arabian) are turned out to add outcross blood, usually for a few years until his oldest daughters are of breeding age (if they didn't sell), then he would be brought in, and another stallion (arabian or chinco) would be turned out.
