Research on horse slaughter
Do a search on Google Books.
A word of "warning"--this is a very emotional subject, and papers are best written based on fact, not emotion. Be sure you research both sides of the story, so that you can muster the facts for your argument for your point of view.
Don't get caught up in just the emotional aspects. Picture yourself having to physically debate your points with someone with the opposing view (that slaughter houses should be increased, for example), and try to be able to counter this imaginary person's facts with facts of your own.
Remember, people who believe that slaughter houses should remain open have an ace up their sleeve--they constantly ask the anti-slaughter people why aren't they trying to get better treatment of animals at, and while traveling to, slaughter houses.
Also, you should try to formulate a response as to how you would solve the problem of dumped horses, neglected/abused horses, decreased value of horses (since the kill-buyers always set the bottom line price), and disposal of horses that do need to be put down, due to injury or disease.
My statement that Im going to prove is 'horse slaughter should be stopped'. In the past I’ve done my research papers on subjects that I wasn’t really interested in, and I did O.K but not great . . . so Im hoping doing it on this I can use facts, and be motivated to do the paper. Im also allowed an interview; I don’t suppose anyone around here has hands on experience? If you did it would be great to have an interview as a source.
I mostly wanted to do it on this subject because I’ve read a lot about the terrible conditions the horses are in, and how they are killed, and I really like the idea of trying to find a way to solve the problems that you suggested
Any ideas or facts people have about the subject would be appreciated
As for the books I think Im just going to go to the library at the weekend,
Are you only supposed to do one interview? Karen would be a good choice, but if you can do a second try to find someone in favor of slaughter, to give contrast to your paper. Also, the Quarter Horse member magazine had an article this past year about why horse slaughter shouldn't be banned. I myself found the logic faulty, but it was well written.
Good luck!
