Default Racing Age Limit

Just curious as to what age most Arabians are retired from racing and if there is an age limit? Any information is highly appreciated.

The minimum age limit is 3rd birthday for Arabians. I don't think that there is a maximum age but you do reach a point where it isn't worth the effort. People ask about starting horses at an advanced age and I don't think that is a good idea in most cases. They can run (there are many examples) as older horses but if that's where you start you have a low probability of getting your money back.

Thanks, I knew it wouldn't be worth it with but with an older guy but I had to laugh at the tab vs. Arab racing debate. I have an older gelding that repeatedly beats straight off the track (money winners) tab’s. Granted we usually race on a dirt road with a decent incline for about a 1/4-mile. If I weren't afraid of him being injured and the whole fact that they’re no real point to it, I'd race him just for s***s and giggles. I'm close enough to Delaware.

I don't believe there's an age limit - however there is an age limit for starting a maiden. I believe it's 11 but of course every state is different - but as someone else said - if you are just "starting" a horse at that age you really have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

Like Moon mentioned, they are to be 3 to race and they can race up to any age as long as they hit the board every now and then (meaning place 1st - 4th). If they are running poor, they will ruled off the track for good.

Idahospud - LOL Yes, in fact they do run races just like TBs. They hold races anywhere from 4 1/2 FL to over a mile!

Raul - I am not sure if you are talking about racetrack Arabians or what because I was thrown off by the age 11 thing????

Arabian horses start their racing careers one year later than other breeds, they can begin racing at age 3.
now, maiden races (races for horses that are just starting or have not won a race) are usually limited to horses under age 5. Arabians are excluded from this age rule, and can begin their first race in their "older" years.
The maximum racing age allowed in many states is 12 years.

I have to disagree with this point. They are many many many horses who have not won races and horses who are first time starters over the age of 5. In fact, we currently have 2 horses in our barn who are 6 and 7 who are still Maidens.
