Mares can bag up a month or so prior to foaling. If you have not had a vet out you may want to have a good exam done and her spring shots along with deworming her prior to foaling (about month 10). This way the foal gets all the needed antibodies. My mare does this exact same thing. She waxes up one month prior to foaling she had a white wax for a month then the day of foaling the wax changed to a honey gold color. You may want to go to a feed store or your local vet or you can order a foal predictor kit online. This is a simple test you can do daily if needed and is 85-90% accurate on telling you when you mare should foal. We used it on ours and was there for the birth. You will also want to get some Nolvasan solution and mixed it 1part Nol. to 3 parts water in a small container so you can dip the foals umbilicus 3 times a day for the first couple of days. Do Not use Iodine or betadine. It is harsh on the foal and can cause problems. You will also want to have your vet out again about 18 hours after the mare foals to have a foal check done and blood taken from the foal and have what is called an IGg test run to make sure the foal recieved all the colustrom from the mare. So get in contact with your vet and have an exam done this way he or she knows what is going on also this way you can get the correct phone number in case the mare foals after hours and you have questions. Most vets will talk you through the birth on the phone if you need help. Once the mare starts the process the foal should be on the ground within 20minutes. Should be standing within an hour and nursing within 2 hours. The mare can pass the placenta immediately or up to 8 hours after. OVer 8 hours the vet needs to see her. Make sure you have a bucket and a garbage bag ready once your mare passes the placenta place it in the garbage bag and fill it with water and then tie the bag and place it in the bucket. This way when your vet gets there to do the post foal exam they can check the placenta and make sure everything looks ok and that it is all there. By putting it in the water you will keep it from smelling. IF you have further questions please feel free to email me or Im me and I will be happy to help you.
