Hello i have just found a horse that i think would be a good candidate for me. but i need to know the equation for converting hands into feet so that i can know how tall to make the shelter. I have not start to save money but i need this equation so that i can know how much wood i need.
Knowing the size of him is great but don't forget the head/neck are higher than the wither height which is where his measurement is taken. A rough guide is 12 ft[3 1/2m] square, rising to 13ft[4m] for horses over 16 hands. Slightly smaller if under that height but no less than 10ft [3m] in height.
I agree minimum height should be 10ft for a smaller horse. Personally I would not go any shorter than 12 feet. This gives them a little room if they decided to stand on two legs. Maximum height, well the sky is the limit.
Good luck
