Hey yall!

Well it might be time for us to move.
We have an offer on our house & now we gotta start thinking hard
In GA we'll have a nice chunk of land for Jolly (5.2acres) but I don't want him to be alone...
What type of animal would yall suggest would go along great with a young horse?
We probably won't buy another horse due to the fact we'll use most of our extra money by building a small two stall stable & arena.
I thought goats? lol
But what do I know :P


Any suggestions?

Goats make good pasture mates for horses. We have 3 pygmy goats (they have their horns) They are always out with the horses in the turnout area. One of the goats has buddied up with one of the geldings. They eat together, play together, she washes him. He will push her with his nose and she will rear up and act like she is going to butt him and they will do this for hours. Then she washes his legs as far up as she can reach. Also Our mare has a new foal at her side does not like any of the other horses around but doesn't mind that the goats are around. The foal is even begining to play with the goats. She loves to chase them around.

The other reason goats make good buddies is that they graze the same way horse do on a pasture, so they won't ruin it.. Unlike sheep who rip out the grass from the roots, cattle are just hard on everything in general. Mini horses and donkey's also make good buddies but require the same up keep as regular size horses. I don't really feed my goat special food, I throw out a little extra hay for each (1/2 flake or so for the 3 of them) but they are easy keepers and are good weed eaters (well some days, mine are a little picky only like certain weeds).

Chickens- They can free range, + the bonus of eggs and are great bombproofers. Never known a horse to be spooky if the farm had chickens.

Oh, And if you don't get any other animals you will become the herd leader to your horse and training will be easier. Even though they are a herd animal they do OK alone.
