Default Coyote Attack .. Again

Has anyone seen a rise in coyote attacks on your animals. I am in California and man this little guy jumped our dog (small to medium size mutt) around 7:00 oclock in the morning, trying to beat the heat with working some horses.

Anyway he ran down within 20 feet of where we were and tackled the dog. Then after we ran him off, he stood up on a hill not 30 feet away? Man if I had a pistol. Sorry but my animals come first.

Anyway wondering if anyone has seen a rise in this, not just the suburban regulars but seems they are coming more often.

Thanks.

A friend actually had a newborn foal killed by one. The mare dropped way early and wasn't put up yet.

CD,

Hope your dog is ok.

My dad is the farm manager at a boys school, and they have recently had construction out by them (area is still growing, just a little slower now) which has stirred up the coyotes. He has lost all their chickens and 8 sheep/goats in the past 6 months. They are coming in and jumping 5 foot fences and killing. They have been bold enough to come up in the middle of the day to survey things. The game and fish department wont do anything cause they are not bothering humans. And since the school is in the town limits you can not shoot a gun. I am further out in the country/desert (so to speak) and I haven't had coyotes near our place in years and just recently I spotted a mama coyote that has pups somewhere close by as you can hear them at dusk and dawn howling. My guns are loaded and ready just in case, cause out here I can shoot anything that threatens my livestock legally.

Years ago after we first moved out here and just had our dogs we had a pack come to the back of the property trying to lure our dogs under the backyard fence (property was not competely fenced at the time). We had scared them off numerous times and they wouldn't stay away so finally my hubby got his bow out and was able to kill one of the 4. After that we haven't had a problem till now.

Although attacks on people are rare, coyotes are often attracted to dog food and animals that are small enough to appear as prey. Garbage, pet food and even feeding stations for birds and squirrels will attract suburban coyotes into backyards.

My trainers brother heard an attack on his neighbor's horse in the middle of the night. A while before, he said that he was hearing them more often. So when he went out to talk to his neighbor after he heard the attack, he already saw his neighbor out checking the horse. It was a full grown horse, and they didn't have any other pets. But when they turned on the lights to the back yard, they saw that the horse has a large cut on his neck.

Do you guys call fish/game and report them? Here they will do areal shoots of them if they have become a pest. They did this just last year as they were attacking a neighbors sheep and getting quite a few in the area.

Not too much problems with coyotes doing that here, our problem is wolves. They kill horses, cows, sheep, llamas, dogs.......ect. I think that the wolves have put a real damper on the coyote population. I have even been stalked TWICE while out horseback riding, and it was really spooky.

Oh thats terrible. Yeah we have our share of coyotes in AZ and now I moved to SoCal, we have them here too. The packs wake me up at night and sometimes I worry about my horses, even though they are 15.2hh+
