Default Ferrets

Has anyone had any luck with Ferrets, My daughter is wanting one but isn't it illegal in California to own them?

Because we went into a pets smart to get some pet food and there was almost a whole Isle of stuff dedicated to them?

How much do they cost and I hear they are smelly and like racoons always getting into trouble.

Mmm, my teacher had one. Yes, they are illegal in California unless you have a permit to own one. Mmm, you can potty train them and teach them to do all sorts of stuff. I dont' think they are any stinker than dogs, just keep it bathed. Not sure on the price either, but I'm guessing exspensive for you legally can't have them here.

They can be house broken. They are usually have a favorite person that they will go to and can be very affectionate to that person, much like a cat. I wonder how much the permit costs. It may be no more than getting a license for a dog.

I had a friend who had one. She loved him a lot and got him house trained. He was well behaved.

I'm in Illinois and they are legal here. I have a friend that has one named Slinky (which is apparently the #1 Ferret name) and he's an angel. He's loving and soft. Everyone adores him.

I've never had a ferret but I know a lott of people who do or at least used to & they love them. They can be litter box trained & you can walk them & do all kinds of fun things with them. I don't live in California....but I've never heard of them being illegal in the US.

I am in Canada so don't know the legalities of it.. When I was working at a Vet Clinic they had a clinic ferret he was pretty good.. Was litter trained and loved the bathtub.. As far as I know you need to get them fixed to prevent the stink? As far as health care they needed vaccines, the same as a dog I believe..

Well I love them because they are cute and cuddly and Slinky is into EVERYTHING! He loves to "ride" my Rottie. She thinks he's funny.

We used to have one. We are in PA. They are excellent pets, lots of fun and have lots of energy. Like any pet, they need time out of the cage daily as they aren't like a hamster. They are really sweet pets. They can be litter trained. They like to go in corners, and they do have litter and litter boxes specifically for them. It's not hard to train them at all..at least it wasn't for my 2.

The reason that PetSmart and other places in California carry the food is because it is illegal to own them, but NOT illegal to provide food, products and vet care. (Hey this is California, don't expect LOGIC!) It's next to impossible to get a permit for one, so keep that in mind if you wish to remain within the law.

The reason they are Illegal here is because of the fear of rabies. There has been no rabies vaccine created that works on member of the weasel family. FYI, Gerbils are illegal in Calif. too!
