Pasture Mis-Behavior
Hi everyone! I have a question and hopefully someone has experienced something similar to this. I have 4 ponies. Two are younger (around 5) and two are older (around 20), all geldings. They get turned out in the pasture during the day, weather permitting. They come in when they're ready and waiting by the gate. The past couple turn-outs have been frustrating to say the least and have been getting progressively worse. One of the old timers (Cody) has decided that he is not going to allow anyone out of the pasture. They all want to come in, even Cody, but he will not let anyone out. As soon as one of them approaches the gate, he will charge them to make them run away. So, I figured, maybe he's become the new alpha and wants to come in first. Nope! He won't come anywhere near the gate until EVERYBODY else is in. But he won't let anyone else in. It has become very frustrating and dangerous to let everyone in now. I say dangerous, because if you do manage to get one of the other pony's on the lead line to get them through the gate, Cody will come charging and the pony you have on the line will bolt, trying to get away from him. I have tried to get Cody first, without success. I have tried chasing Cody away with the lead line. He will run away temporarily, but this causes everyone to run away. I don't get it! Cody will come right up to the gate as soon as everyone else is in. I guess it wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't 20 some degrees here and I didn't have to stand out there for an hour trying to get ponies in. Any suggestions? The only thing I can come up with is to turn him out by himself.
