Question slowing the canter....help please :) ?

I got a mare about a month and 1/2 ago, and i love here to death! she is smart, learns fast, and has a good, strong basic training with some sorting/cutting training. not to mention she is sweet a sugar . and in the time i have had her, i have worked to get her so-fast-trot-we-are-almost-cantering to a nice almost jog that i can easily sit (still a work in progress) and now, i have been cantering her for the last few weeks, and she has a pretty fast canter. and she isn't out of control, just faster than i want. the second i say whoa, she stops so hard i almost go over her head (even though i am expecting it now...still working on the part where i stop at the same time as the horse )and even when she is almost completely damp with sweat (it was also hot that day) she is only a little slower, barely noticeable. i have not really made much progress with her though i have been working with her on it about 12 days out of the last 2 weeks on her cantering. she is not in pain, afraid, uncomfortable, i am fairly balanced, not leaning into turns, not accidentally squeezing her/signaling her to go faster. and, i am no trainer! I officially announce i am knowledge-less in this matter, and am ready to humbly take advice! i would love it if someone would help me find something to try any suggestion is welcome, i have loads of time, and have access to poles, barrels, cones, ect., a HUGE field that i can ride on, and i have a horse butt-load of patience and determination(otherwise my older sister would not have reached 16 )

thanks for your time, and hopefully i did not bore you with my rambling!

hey. Glad you found a mare you like, i think the last time you posted you were looking for one. ?

To slow the canter most people will run them into the ground (ie canter till shes too tired to go fast). the problem with this is that you will have to either lunge or ride your horse down every time.

I like this method to reward a horse for going slow: Ask your horse to canter from a walk, look for one or two steps into the transition, DONT LET HER TROT INTO A CANTER. Then as soon as she gets settled into a canter, ask her to walk, NOT STOP, WALK. dont let her slam on brakes, make her give you a good downward transition. Then as soon as she is comfortably walking, start this process over again. She will learn that theres no point on going fast when im just gonna stop in a few seconds anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks! i will try that! should be interesting, but she seems to know alot of stuff(i am sure she was taught to jog. i know i can't preform miracales! she just needed reminding) today, i found out she didn't quite seem to understand at first the meaning of a gruadule turn to form a circle... she kept trying to make a sharp turn and fly out of it :P eventually got it! practice make (almost) perfect!
and i was looking for a horse. i found out that all ideals of a so-called 'dream horse' are dropped when the REAL one walks up and seems to say 'hey, i'm here. What took you so long?' i ended up going to a well-know horse broker, looking at one of the other horses. they did not say that the mare we were looking at was only 3 1/2 until we got there and basically ran her hind end in circles when you mounted... she was sweet, but nervouse, not sure if herself, and frankly, just needed some experince. i know when something is too much for me...but they brought out another mare (the 4th horse i made them saddle up... i bet they loved me!) who had only been there 2 days, hadn't even put together a video to post on their website yet. fell in love with her the moment i saw her! had the refiened look that i love, clean lines, not too pokey or rocket-powerd, was a treat under saddle(though almost went over on that first turn on the trot...) and was calm, sound, and a big bonus: neck reined! and during the test ride, she was in heat, so she was at her 'worst' . we bought her and another horse (little more work, but he is a sweetheart too, in his own way.) though it was a REALLY rocky start. she had a cold when she came in, expensive vet visit (what other kind is there ? ), then was almost out of quarinteen and in to the pasture, but sickness broke out in her stall area, so kept for another 2 weeks after she was given a clean bill of health.... more than 4 weeks in a stall total, not counting stall time at the brokers and the first few days i was worried because she pinned her ears back and showed us the horse version of a snarle at anyone who came near, and fought with the horses next to her... predictably, she did not have a smooth entry to the mare herd (owner told me there was squeling for a few days after). come back from spring break and she has 3 or 4 different bite marks on her rump (healing nicely, hoping they don't grow back white!)

needless to say, we have clicked she is a little 'delicate' though. she lets you know if the water is too hot or cold for Princess Betty, she will whip her tail around until the tie comes out if you braid it, she paws to let you know to hurry up because SHE is impatiant, ect. but i love her for it.

once again, sorry for rambling! LOVE her so much, can't bear to leave her quirks out... there is a few funny stories i should post on this website, but another time!

so glad you found your partner. I'll never know what it is about the ones with a 'tude but they wiggle into you heart. Maybe its because they have a personality. Cant wait to read of the exploits of Miss Princess Betty. On a sierous note, it sounds like your relationship may benifit from some ground training to work on your communication and trust.

Hello Twesternrider, how is the canter going? I have my 2-cents for you also, if you're needing any pocket change hehe
