Default Mini Pony

Hello All! I am new to this site and also new horse owner and am looking foward to learning alot from everyone. My wife and I bought a min for our children(2 and 4) for Christmas. He is 5 yrs old and have been told he has been ridden by children and handled quite a bit. When the owner delivered him, I took his lead and he walked with me pretty well. Well, my wife took him out yesterday, and he started to run in cirlces and buck. I came and took the lead and he did it to me a couple times, but I made the lead shorter and I walked backwards while he walked toward me. What can i start doing to prevent this? I'm guessing he didn't do it when he got delivered since the owner was present??

Unfortunately not what you want to hear-but sounds like the world of horse dealers.

It's hard to say as not all people are this way, but with horses believe nothing your told and everything you see. If you did not see any kids handle and ride him assume that he doesn't do either. Please don't use your kids as test pilots.

No matter how cute a young 5 yr old mini [any breed] is not a good match for novice owners and small children.

Ask your Vet or feed store if they recommend a trainer in your area.
He may not need to go for training but you guys need some guidance.

Theresmultiple books, but I have found that they can lead you down the wrong path. Happy to recommend a few not quite beginner ones.

Sounds like your best option would be some hands on help.

Don't get to discouraged, all learning experiences have a silver lining some you just need to look harder at.

You could have been sold a pony that wasnt accurately represented. I would get some professional help if the issues continue. Make sure he is getting his turn out time and isnt just stuck in a stall. Don;t be afraid to sell him and get a horse that suits you better!
