Default What Steps If There Was No Imprinting

Our little filly was born about 12 days ago and because she was born in the field we did not get a chance to do the initial imprinting we would have like to have done. While she is not "scared" of us, persay, she won't willingly let us handle her.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help us from this point?

I would recommend pulling the two of them out of the pasture and putting them in a smaller pen and working with them on a daily basis. You can still turn them out but bring them up a feeding time in the evening and work with them handle the mare and the foal. Tie the mare up and catch the foal and just start messing with it. About 15-20 at the most a day. That is all they have an attention span to handle.

Thanks P8ntCrazy. We have been wanting to do that but our corral has been terribly muddy from all the rain we've been getting. We do feed them in the barn most of the time and she will bring the baby in, but the stall in the barn is just too small for comfort with this mare to be messing around too much. Hopefully the rain will ease up so that the corral outside the stall can completely dry out.

Terri,

I wish we were getting rain, I can't tell you the last time I saw water fall from the sky. Hopefully it will dry up for you soon.

P8ntCrazy, I wish we could send you some of our rain to help you out. Where are you located and I'll work on that? The rain has definitely been great on our fields but just about the time we get things closer to the house dried up another storm comes along.

I am in the true Sunshine state! Arizona

We could sure use some rain. It seems like each year we get less and less.
