Default Clicker Training

I am just starting to learn about clicker training and was wondering if anyone on this list does this and would have any book recommendations for best learning? I have miniature horses.

I have seen it used in dogs and it works well. Mini's are so smart that I think he would pick up on it quickly.. They are just big dogs anyways. My families are to smart for their own good. Learning how to open gates, walk through fences, untie things, climb up and stand on stuff. You will have to let us know how it goes. I have a friend who has taught hers all kinds of tricks.

Slonepony,

My family got into mini's on accident. A lady my mom worked with husband died and the horses were his, she had this little black stud colt the was a BEAST. He would come at you teeth bared, the lady went in his pen with a plastic baseball bat. So she talked my parents into taking him. Well, the first place he went once we got him on the trailer was to see old Doc. He was castrated before he ever made it home. It took a few months and then he settled in to being a big dog. We had just one for years and he ran out with all the full size horses. He would pick on them like crazy. They (big horses) would come in with bite marks, missing hair, etc. So when we moved here I cam across a breeder that was getting out of the business. I thought if he had a buddy maybe he would lay off the big horses. Well, after talking with the breeder she gave us the last two gelding for free and we bought her last two mares. Like I've said before they are like chips. At most we had about 10. My parents are now down to 5. They are used for pleasure driving, and in a school program. They are easy for the kids to handle. They are fun to have around and have draft size personalities.

Here is a link for you with books on clicker training horses.
The Clicker Center

I used Karen Pryor's books to train my Old English Sheepdog. I really liked
the training and the lessons really seemed to stick. He adored the treats.
Toward the end I was dispensing hugs, as he was getting a little belly on
him from all the rewards. Even using very small pieces of treats added up.

Good luck with the training and please update us!
