Respecting you and liking you kind of go hand in hand. Gain your horses respect and they stop doing a lot of undesirable behaviors, we interpret this as "liking" us because they are behaving. The more we gain our horses respect the more they trust us and start "behaving". Start out by doing lots of ground work with him. Keep him out of your personal space, he can't nip you from 3 - 4 feet away. Once you start gaining his respect the nipping should stop.

It sounds like he was a spoiled horse with his previous owner and had no respect for them. You do need to gain respect from him and not worry so much about him liking you. He needs to know (like the previous post stated) what personal space is and that he is not allowed in yours unless invited. If he does invade your space let him run into your hand, elbow, so to speak. It takes time but your the one in charge not him. Good Luck

Well here's my 2 cents for what it is worth. I have ahd several horses and own nine now including a stallion.
First off if you have a nippy horse the number one rule is NO TREATS from the HAND! unless you give a cue to take it. I always tell my horses with a sturn voice (TREAT) then hand the treat.
Yes respect is one thing and very important but you love your horse and want to hug , kiss scratch and rub him,, right? and you can't do that from 3 or 4 feet away.
So my way of dealing with this is - every action causes a response. right? So when your horse nips at you , YOU respond by touching and rubbing his face head ears nose untill he is to the point of QUIT!!! He will soon learn that if he nips you ... he is going to get more attention then he wants and you will become anowing!!! But if when he nips, you- push his head away, hit him, jump back ect it becomes a game to him.
I hope you get the picture?
Good luck
Cathy
