Default Blood clotting agent

Copying this from my introduction page, just in case any trainers want to offer comment:

Looking here to see whether there's an interest in the equestrian/training/vet community in a hemostatic (blood clotting) agent called CELOX, currently used mostly by combat troops and EMS. The surpassing quality and efficacy of this new product is unquestionable - it's just that I've only ever encountered one situation where blood loss from a wound was the primary - or even a significant - threat to a horse (and that was a horse that got left out for a whole day after wounding himself). Seems that others' mileage has varied - one trainer told me recently that there would be a HUGE demand for CELOX because barrel horses (which she trains) were always getting cut and sewn up... well... I've had some horses get cut and sewn up all right, but I never saw a major artery get severed (which is what CELOX is mainly about) even at VRH shows.

Anyhow, I am in a position to bring a very good product to the horse/large animal vet community if there is in fact a demand, so I thought I'd ask around here. Having a deep interest in horses' welfare, at least I know it's the best stuff for the purpose even if the purpose is an exceedingly rare one. If it's not a rare one, then I think I should try to get CELOX into the hands of those most likely to need it. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and experiences, and advice about where best to discuss this on HorseChitChat.

Thanks for your feedback!

Sounds like there would be interest in a product like CELOX.

Have you talked with any of the Schools of Veterinary Medicine ER
faculty? Many of the schools have an annual conference for
students/Alumni and vet techs. They look for people to give
presentations and have a vendor area for sales.

If the university has a business department, you could get
assistance with a business plan--(ie) how best to market the product, etc.

You could also consider sending an article to a magazine like
The Horse that focuses on equine medicine to get the Docs interested and make them
aware it is available.

Just a few thoughts from an ex health professional to get the
ideas flowing...........

Good luck with the product launch!

Default a rare need...

Thanks for the response Jahra.

So far, I've gotten this from the large animal vets from whom I've been able to get responses -

The feeling is that cases where blood loss is a real threat (severe arterial bleeding) are pretty rare. It does happen, and it would be great if you happened to have CELOX on hand when it did. But the chances of being able to administer it within the very few minutes of opportunity are... well... slim and none. It's not like a combat situation where there's almost always a medic nearby and those kinds of wounds are expected and anticipated.

The product does have a good shelf life, but I'm not sure that many vets are going to carry it with them religiously just in case of something so rare.

At this point I'm just going to give some to a few large animal vets, wait a while, and see if they've had any occasion to use it. I can't help thinking "if it only saves one good horse, isn't it worth it?" If it happened to be MY good horse, it certainly would be!
