Default Hunter/Jumper Shows??

Hello...

I have a question about hunter/jumper shows, and showing in general.

I haven't been in a show ring for 8-9 years. I competed in huntseat (flat), western, and halter for about 10 years, but I stopped when I was 17 and went along with only pleasure riding. When I was showing as a kid, I never got involved or was ever really educated in the politics and requirements of showing, I just did the practicing, care, and competing... my parents took care of the "paperwork," if you will.

What association memberships are required? I know there are breed associations such as AQHA and SCHAA, etc. which are required for the shows I used to be involved in, but how do I know which ones are required? I have been googling and have been having a difficult time figuring it out.

Also, I would like to start jumping competitively as well. What associations, or requirements are there to get involved through that route? I found USHJA online, is that a required association, or recommended? Any required for thoroughbreds? There are just so many out there, how do I know which ones are required for the type of showing I want to do?

I'm sorry, I know this is a rather broad topic, but any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

If your just getting started, you may not need to join anything.
I'm on the East coast, so can't help with your local clubs.
Google-Hunter/Jumpers shows in southern Ca. It may give you a starting point.
Otherwise to do recognized H/J- you will need to join-USEF United States Equestrian Federation.
From there you can pin-point your exact discipline.
Normally any of your USEF shows will average $20-125 per class with another $50-125 in misc. fees.
Local or even "c" rated shows, can have enteries as low as $15 per class.
Look up some of your area classifieds for training barns, they should also be able to point you in the right direction as well.
Good Luck
