So do you keep them trimmed by standard method or do you use the Natural Barefoot method? (I don't like using that term because it tends to get misunderstood by alot of shoers- if that term is confusing to you just let me know).
I really love the performance and health of the barefoot hoof better than shod and although I do sometimes on the occasion shoe, I try to keep mine barefooted as often as I can.
With the barefoot route the hooves can be maintained and conditioned in such as way as to meet any sort of working/riding need for that hoof. I know endurance riders who have been able to travel up to 100 miles a day cross-country on barefooted horses.
We ourselves host a Pioneer Wagon Train ride ever summer and this season I had 2 horses on the ride who traveled 45 miles on rock, gravel, and pavement in 3 days of traveling. (no grass, dirt or soft areas at all) and were still in perfect traveling condition afterwards.
Have you ever checked out: hoofrehab.com ?
Loved hearing about your barefoot experiences. It's always so validating. I really like seeing the health of the whole hoof, without the obstruction of the shoe. I have several friends who have converted and would never go back to shoes.
