Hey everyone! I'm straight from Ocala, and I love horses! lol I was wondering though, how much bigger is a Clydesdale than a regular stallion? I never got the chance to see one alongside another.

The only time I have every seen them is at rodeo's and once in a stable at seaworld. But they are sizable beast. I believe the "bud" horses try for the peak heigth of 18 hands. And they usually can tap the 2000 pound mark.

Welcome to the forum. Hmmm a regular stallion could be anything from a Miniature horse to a Clydsdale since a Stallion is a male horse that has not been gelded. So I am guessing you are a bit new to horses in general. With that assumption in place, I will give you some basics on size and what a hand is.

4 inches = 1 hand

So an 18 hand horse would be 6 feet tall at the withers (shoulder).

below 14.2 hands is considered a pony. 14.2 means 14 hands 2" (or 4'10")

As for what is "normal" it would depend on what type of horse you are usually watching. If you are watching a western horse that is working cattle, they can range from 14.2 -16.2.

Hunters and jumpers are often a bit taller, but usually not over 17 hands.

These are generalities and not set in stone! I've seen pony jumpers and HUGE quarter horses work cattle. I've also worked cattle myself on a pony that was 12.2!

Cheryl gave you a great answer. Also a drafts average size shoe (8-12) is the size of a dinner plate Where an average 15 hand horses shoes size (size 0-2) is about the size of your hand with your fingers spread out. Those drafts are definately beautiful gentle giants.
