Default Best Young Horse Feed

We had a little colic scare with our 2 y/o stud this week. The vet said that while the feed he is on probably did not contribute to the colic, we are feeding him way too much and need to switch feeds. He is currently on ~5 lbs (three feed-store scoops) twice a day of Triple Crown Growth. The vet suggested going to a high fat feed but I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion as to what would be a good feed to switch him to. He is in training, being ridden 2-3 times a week, ~800 lbs.

Don't know about you, but lack of rain here has everything dried up so lacking both moisture & nutritional content.

5# per day or per feeding-5 # does not seem like alot.
I think the label directions say between 10-12.

For under 4yr olds in training.
Amounts per day divided by 3 feedings
Alfalfa cubes-10lb soaked weight
2.5lb Omelene 400
1/2-1lb whole oats
15-30lb Orchard grass hay-due to bad pastures

Although research differs-
Sunday 2lb Wheat Bran mash

General research has suggested
2yr old going to mature to 1,000#
Current weight 725lb- daily commercial mix grain 2.75lb- total daily feed 13.5lb- Dry matter 1.9% of live weight- TDE-total digestible energy 1250- protein 12.3%- calcium
.43 %- phosphorous .28%

It works well for me although each program differs per horse/location/breed/metabolism and Owners personal preference on BCS

Young horses are specifically a challenge to feed and grow because they require a LOT of nutrients. Creed feeding is right now encouraged by experts because they believe this is the best way to fill in any gaps in the nutritional requirements of the foal. However, you need to always check with a veterinarian first, especially in terms of the dosage requirements. The dosage will also determine the amount of nutrients that your foal can benefit from, which is another reason to pay close attention to the dosage.

You can feed beet pulp, they make a molasses-free type that is pretty good. Since hay is not an option for you the hay cubes would be a good idea too. They don't have to be alfalfa cubes, you can also get timothy or mixed hay cubes too. Also keep an eye on your feed. If the owner has skinny horses and doesn't feed them extra it is possible he/she could start dipping into to your feed for the other horses.

I also want to give you a big gold star for being so responsible with your horse's training by starting at 3 and then giving him time off to grow, you are doing things right and will be rewarded with a sound horse for many years to come!

Have you dicussed the weight issue with the other owner? Hopefully the other horses aren't sick or carrying a heavy parasite load they could transfer to your horse. And if the weight issue is a matter of the horses not being fed I would be very tempted to have animal control pay them a visit.
