Default Where to start?

I need to find a vet to use for my horse one day.

Any ideas on questions to ask when interviewing an equine vet? I am thinking about finding one before I even start my search for a horse. I will want a vet's opinion before buying.

I have a small animal vet, but have never met any large animal vets. I was wondering what you all suggested as far as what to look for.

Default Finding a vet

I dont have any special advice into "interviewing for an equine vet". As we are a very isolated district , gepgraphically. We have always been thrilled to have any vet . We organize rural horses to a central location for vacc. routine procedures and are prepared to trailer to the vet, in all except the most serious cases. We appreciate whatever vet we can get.

If you are looking for a vet try asking other local horse people who they are using . Or calling large animal clinics and see if they are taking new clients.

It has been my experience that I have never met a vet I didn't like , most are over worked and underpaid and if they are still in their profession then they are there for the love of it not the money.

You can call your state vet and they can give you a list of vets. If you are in a state that has a college of vet medicine you can go there or call and ask them for a list of vets. You will want to find someone that is up to date on things. Referral hospitals are great because they have people on staff 24/7/365.

Why not asking your small animal vet if he knows someone ? He probably knows of equine veterinarians, if not he may be able to tell you where to look.
