Default Cold Back?

What is Cold Back?
I am getting a new mare and was told she is cold backed. I was told that you have to lunge herfirst before riding and that she bucks at the canter when being lunged untill the saddle gets settled adn then she's fine and doesn't buck when ridden.
Seems to me a horse that is broke shouldn't buck unless they are really green and have no balance or something is hurting.
Any thoughts on this?

I think you maybe right on the money, either she was/is not broke all the way or it was done wrong. Or that the saddle they were using didn't fit properly and was pinching her and hurting. Either way sounds like she needs a little more training.

there are some horses, regardless of training that just do this especially if not ridden for a while, they are really just playing and have some excess energy. If you ride them often enough the issue usually although not always goes away if it's not a physical problem or bad saddle fit.
