I probably wont be much help, but your post sounds like I had written it myself. the only difference is I havent been able to get my mare vet checked yet. every time I have scheduled an emergency has came up and he couldnt make the trip. however I had a lady who raises horses look at her and told me if she had a foal the previous year she could still have milk from that. thats all I know.lol good luck.

It is called inapproprate lactation. Some mares have had foals in the past and some have not. As long as the udder is not hot and hard you have nothing to worry about. Just let the udder be. If you continue to strip it you keep the milk duct open inviting in infection that could cause mastitis. I have seen numerous mares with this and we just let them be and just have the owners watch and make sure it doesn't get hot and hard. The great majority of mares with this never have a problem, and live happy normal lives other than their lactating. There are drups but its not worth the time, cost, and effort. As far as her belly goes it may get smaller and it may not. It just depends on the mares age, the number of foals she has had in the past. The type of exercise program that she is on.

Good luck and hope this helps
