General vet expenses per year
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering what your general vet expenses are per year (just a general estimate).

Really varies.
Have a nice x-bred backyard pony. Easy keeper, minimal upkeep. Vaccinations and coggins $250. Then just spend $500 on diagnostic x-rays, 1 bill twice the amount in 2 hours time.

Good lord, coggins for allllll of my horses might cost almost $250. I think it's interesting how 100 years ago, all these tons of vaccines hadn't been invented, and the horses...and humans didn't have the health trouble and degraded immune systems like they do now at the same time.
The overall vet bill for me a year (if I don't have any emergencies, or surgeries or something like that) isn't more than $400-$500 a year for 14-18 horses. I do alot of my own teeth care and floating, I also give the necessary shots. NOT the un-necessary shots with the terrible discusting contents that hugely de-grade immune systems among numerous other things.

It only takes once.
Will never give my own shots- New horse to me had the vet in probably only for shots, gave all my old/original guys. Left the newbie for last as I didn't know him or his behaviors. Gave the same as everyone else, 5 seconds allergic reaction on the ground in seizures. THANK GOD I had the vet there as he went to his truck and pulled out the right drug in the right amount and could get an IV in him in a matter of 30 seconds. That happened 23 yrs ago, still have that horse and still pay the farm call so- just in case...
And I too think that horses are over innoculated but, their living conditions, feeds, training programs, transportation, stresses all go against everything natural to them. If I lived in a place that could support 1 horse to 10 acres, they would be outside and mother nature would take care of them better than I can. But I don't so by owning them I also own the responsiblity to take care of them to the best ability and knowledge that I have.

Coggins, rabies, and basic shots (I usually do the 3-Way and Potomac) plus a dental exam and float with "power tools" if necessary is about $300-$500 for my two guys. That includes the call charge and sedation for the floats.

Really for me it depends on the year. I have been in the small animal/equine medical field for over 13 years so I do most of it myself these days. I do vaccines twice a year spring and fall (6way and west nile), then my pregnant mare gets her Pnuemobort vaccines at 3,5,7,9 months. Deworming I do myself. The only thing my vet does is floats and that is only every other year ($250 per horse, she uses power tools, I could do it with hand but it is too much work), and putting and taking out my mares caslick , and then my post foal checks, and emergancies.
Standard care (by vet)with no emergancies on my mare about $500-800 depending on year.
Care on my gelding by vet $0-250 Depending on year unless their is and emergancy
