Unhappy fly sheets?

Hey all!

I was wondering since we have really bad fly problems at the stable we board at...should I get a fly sheet? I'm not just talking about those tiny little flies, we have huge horse flies that show no mercy lol.

So a would fly sheet protect him from those types of flies? Also along time ago I saw a fly sheet that can be used while ridden, I was wondering if they still sell those? (maybe I should google this..) I would usually just kinda bare through the flies but they are so bad.. it's crazy.

Thank you!

(also! I'm getting photos of Jolly being ridden today!)

Hey! My sister got Cal Bred a fly sheet, but there
are not flys yet here.. So we don't know how it works.
But I think it will work, why do you think they made
fly sheets?

Here are some sites you can get them off that aren't
that bad of a price:

Equine Supplies, Horse Supplies, Horse Supply
Miller Harness - Horse Tack, Horse Supplies and Riding Apparel at Exceptional Prices....

But you know, if you have to get it now go to a tack
shop. And, i'm pretty sure they still have those fly sheets
that you ride with, they even have fly masks you can ride
with too.

I think Dover Saddlery - Quality English Horse Tack & Horse Supplies for the Equestrian.
has some.. Or, maybe http://http://www.statelinetack.com/...35d&catid=1715 (Fly Sheets)

I hope this helps

Christina

I've considered one for Jack, but as good as he is at getting into sticky situations I think he might get tangled up in one if turned out in it. As far as riding goes, they have sheets that go under the saddle and hang over the rear to protect it from flies. Any long thin blanket would work, just put it under the saddle and let it hang over.

If you have a really bad fly problem and some good owners.
See if you can talk everyone into splitting the cost of Equitrol or KV Valley makes MVP larvicide.
Your main selling points- It will cost less in the long run instead of bottles of chemical sprays, you won't just chase the away, you'll actually have NO flys.
You can also hang the bags, they work very well also.
12 horses currently live here, haven't bought fly spray in 8 yrs.

I have tried many different fly sheets.
Some of them are a heavy mesh like material and all of the horses
at my barn will turn and run from them. since then I have bought
some light weight very pliable fly sheets and they work wonderful
and the horses seem to enjoy them.

I had horrible flies last year they would leave welts on my horse!! (ekkk!)
So I always have SWAT on hand to cover open sores
and keep flies away from the sores.

Hey girl, yes the sheets work, but don't get the fly boots! Rip off- they are useless as they just fall down around the horse's pasterns.

Have you tried Fly predators? I hear they work well. Also sandwich baggies half full of water and nailed up around the top inside of your barn somehow wards them off. Not sure why, but they work.

For flyspray I used Repel 35X (natural fly spray) and Bronco GOLD (not the cheap bronco, it doesn't work) and mix them together 50/50. The Bronco GOLD actualy kills the flies if they come into contact. Remember if you're fly-spraying; the most fly-affected area's are the face, chest, and legs. The hindquarters and majority of the barrel/back is the reason their's that nice long tail back there !

Yeah, I had always heard that too and tried it with the same result. The smaller flies didn't like it but the big horse flies didn't seem affected. As another negative the Skin So soft has mineral oil (used refined motor oil from car companies) and clogs up skin pores so bad for skin too. Yep, hard to believe but yes it's one of the main ingredients, at least the Avon SSS I've seen.

Well hey let us know what Jolly thinks of his new fly sheet when you get it on him!

I have heard of Avon using refined motor oil too.
When you get that fly sheet home, why not take a
couple of pics of Jolly being a model in it?
That would be awesome!
