I have Stowaways too. Not too thrilled about them. There are just too many compartments, zippers,... that I can NEVER find what I am looking for. They put so many smaller size compartments they didn't leave room for any bigger size articles to be packed. They would never work for packing anything more then a day ride. I am going back to the plain old cantle bags that seem to fit everything and my old favorite horn bags. The Stowaways look neat, don't shift around. great idea, but they sewed the space right out of them.
I would find a combination saddle bag/cantle bag that you can seperate.

Great Bags
Cantle bags do give you more room But someone should keep the stowaways for just what you said. Smaller items. Medic supplies and stuff if you don't carry a seperate bag for that.
I like the big compartments two. Just shove it in and away you go. Give you more rootin room.
That would be a good project for an equine designer to come up with. large back inside could small outside thats it. Simple and easy.

I have Saddle Softwear System Bags. can do anything from an hours ride to 2 weeks. Excellant gear well constructed, and convert to luggage if you need be. The saddle bags also convert into a day pack if you decide to take a break and do some day hiking. I have used these bags with my western saddle, aussie saddle and english saddle, and virtually eliminated the need for a pack horse, except for packing out when hunting.
