Default Quiet Gentleman

I guess my stallion is the exception to the rule. He is quiet in every aspect and is not agressive towards mares. We have people come visit and he is the first horse everyone plays with. I have caught visitor's kids climbing all over him out in the pasture (the kids were somewhat ADHD and were not controllable.) Thankfully my stallion just enjoyed the attention. I did train him to stand still while I crawlled between his legs and under him though (I do that with all the horses I train..you never know when you might accidentally end up under neath and if they aren't afraid of you being under there, I've found they stand still and wait for you to get out.) At any rate, even with the mares, my stallion is not agressive. We had another old breeder down the road call one year and ask to use my stallion because his (an uncle to mine on the sire's side) had ravaged two mares badly and did not breed them. So we sent ours over as a professional favor and after the all clearn that the mares had not been bred by the previous stallion, he took care of them. I've had more trouble with mares beating up my stallion! LOL hes a lover not a fighter. (We mainly do pasture breeding and mares tend to get nasty sometimes when left alone)

we breed old Foundation QH's and Ihave found many FQH breeders have the same response with their stallions, they are easy to handle. I expect that hotter blooded breeds are more difficult to breed but I firmly believe that ANY stallion can be gentle if trained properly.

I loved the story about the young stallion falling over in the mud and then going to his stall to pout. They do have their pride don't they?

I don't have a stallion, but I have worked with one quite a bit and would eventually like to be able to have a very nice stallion.
There is nothing quite like having a stallion, nothing compares to riding one IMO, but they're a double edged knife. If you don't assert yourself with them from day one and make sure they understand you're the boss they can be extremely dangerous. I can't tell you the horror stories I've heard.

I was at a show last June and there was a young 3 yr old stallion in the warm up ring.

First, let me say, he was rank. He should have been gelded asap, he wasn't stallion material and he was very aggressive.(Which is my pet peeve about some people and stallions, they have a colt and just don't have the heart to geld them and breed them for the prestige. A stallion needs to have excellent conformation, temperament, and gaits!).
Ok, rant over,lol.

He took him into the ring and didn't even get a whole lap of the make up arena before the stud started rearing, bucking, bawling, and farting. Needless to say he never actually made it into a class.

I guess my stallion is one exception to the description of studs also. He is gentle, obedient and a truly amazing boy. A child can hand-breed him to a mare ( though that's not going to happen)- he is by Buzz Bar performance sire, by Three Bars (aqha hall of famer).

But, a stallion is a stallion and I have to remember still, to never turn my back on him. I believe the younger the better to start training.
