A question about trail ride
Hi,
Some horses never look like they are necessarily "muscular" but that doesn't mean that they aren't fit. What are you looking to get him in shape for?

A question about trail ride
I've always been told hills and backing up to add or tone muscles. I've got one horse that is just naturally muscled without any work because of her breeding.

A question about trail ride
Like the other two have mention, going up and down hills at a walk do help. Also, some breed of horses is just lean looking and never gets muscular. Gaited horses are one. Some just have a lean narrow look to them. Also, some horse just is not muscular horse. How often are you working your horse? You need to work a horse more than a couple times a week too. The ideal is to have a fit horse. You start out conditioning the horse slowly and build up to doing harder work. Maybe someone can help you get a fitness program going for your horse. Interval training helps too. The thing is what are you trying to get him in shape for? There is different ways of doing it depending on what type of riding you want to do. Need more information.

As mentioned above, horses are like people. Some are more muscularly built than others & never get a "bulky" look to them. Unless you need it to have lots of muscle for something, I wouldn't really worry about it.

Lots of collection, walking and trotting. It is best to do this in a nice 6-8 inch deep arena footing or finding yourself a nice sandy wash. If your horse will allow you can drag logs. But the best is walking and trotting in nice deep footing. To build muscle you also need to make sure the horse is getting enought protien in their feed. Hallow muscles are a due to lack of enough protien.
Hope this helps
